2016 Verget Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Sous le Puits
WINEMAKER: Jean-Marie Guffens
REGION: Burgundy, FR
VARIETAL: Chardonnay
VITICULTURE: Sustainable
"As is often the case with these two wines, here the nose is more elegant and in 2016 it is also more expressive as well with its array of citrus, acacia blossom and pear scents. The sleek, delicious and nicely mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors possess a notably finer mouth feel, all wrapped in a dry, clean and persistent finish that flashes better depth as well. In a word, lovely.” - Allen Meadows, Burghound
This Premier Cru vineyard is situated near the village of Blagny and is the highest Premier Cru within the Puligny appellation. Indeed, at 360-380 metres it could make the claim as the highest Premiere Cru vineyard in the Côte de Beaune (although a few sites in Saint-Aubin may mount a challenge here). Some years ago, this site would have been considered one of the coolest on the Côte d’Or. Today the wines are fleshier and more intense, yet always showcase this producer’s love of purity and refreshing structure. The winemaking is classic Guffens, utilising only the first press juices fermented in barrels with between 20 and 30% new oak (depending on the vintage).
