2020 Clos Bateau Côte de Brouilly Le Pavé

WINEMAKER: Sylvie & Thierry Klok-de Visser
REGION: Beaujolais, FR
VARIETAL: Gamay
VITICULTURE: Organic/Biodynamic
"Gamay from an east facing parcel on the slopes of Mont Brouilly, in the lieu-dit ‘Le Pavé’. This site is 300M above sea level, and the soils here are made up of clay and blue volcanic stone. Whole bunch semi-carbonic maceration for 12 days, with foulage for a bit more extraction. 70% aged in old Burgundy barrels, and 30% in stainless steel for 8 months. Not fined or filtered, zero added sulfites. Production: 1999 bottles.
Deep dark colour. Smells like freshly picked and squeezed blackberries, wild flowers and rocks. Some dark cocoa. Very clean and pure perfume. Blind you would think of Northern Rhône, rather than Beaujolais specifically. To taste it is dense but linear, with fine, fine tannins, and a nice tart acidity that gives length. So mineral, the blue volcanic stone plays a huge part. Serious and delicious, with amazing mid palate depth. Jam packed without being heavy, this is a sensational expression of Cru Beaujolais." - Ryan Larkin
Sylvie & Thierry Klok-de Visser started their adventure in 2019 when they moved to their domaine in Lantignié, Beaujolais. It’s a small 5.5ha, nature-friendly domaine where they work all year round with just the two of them. With almost all the vineyards and land (totalling 8ha) around their domaine, they are creating a thriving ecosystem. As soon as they arrived, they immediately planted over 100 fruit and nut trees in the vineyards to increase biodiversity. They want to work with nature in harmony, not against it.
