2021 Murdoch Hill Pinot Noir

WINEMAKER: Michael Downer
REGION: Adelaide Hills, SA
VARIETAL: Pinot Noir
VITICULTURE: Organic/Sustainable
Downer believes one of the most exciting things about vintage 2021 was the quality of the Pinot Noir, a reflection borne out in this deliciously pure release. From vines with an average age of 20-plus years, the fruit selection here can change from year to year, yet the quality never wavers. The 2021 was predominantly sourced from the Piccadilly Valley. Fermentation was in small batches in open fermenters and a touch less whole-bunch was included this year (25%). Maturation took place in both puncheons and barriques for 10 months (approximately 15% new).
Despite possessing plenty of depth and structure, this is classically fragrant, pretty and elegant, with lots of energy and sap weaving through graceful red fruit. Expect vibrant primary fruit, buoyant acidity and background tannins holding everything together--there's something so joyful here, yet there's also more than enough for the Pinot cognoscenti. The value is hard to beat.
After stints at Vietti, Best's and Shaw+Smith, Michael Downer returned to the family estate in 2012. Alongside taking over winemaker duties, he revitalised their 20 hectares by introducing organic principles and planting new varieties. High quality fruit and outstanding winemaking, Murdoch Hill is going from strength to strength.
