2022 Domenica Gamay

WINEMAKER: Peter Graham
REGION: Beechworth, VIC
VARIETAL: Gamay
VITICULTURE: Organic
Inaugural release. Peter describes Sorrenberg Gamay as a benchmark wine in Beechworth yet surprisingly only three Beechworth vineyards have Gamay in the ground, including Sorrenberg and now Domenica who grafted over a small amount of vines in 2019. Two seperate ferments, one fully destemmed and the other 30% whole bunch with lots of punch overs. Basket pressed to oak on lees for about 10 months before cross flow filtration, bottled unfiltered in February 2023.
The wine is super bright and perfumed but without the confectionery. Still a little of that carbonic character though. Lots of bright purple fruit and that granitic terroir derived earthiness. Fine tannins, structure and minerality resemble the great cru Beaujolais wines of Morgon. Drink or hold for a few years but definitely don't miss out. 200 dozen total production.
Domenica is the project of Peter Graham, who previously worked for 13 years with the top winery in Beechworth (hint: it's Giaconda). The 4 hectares vineyard is located six kilometres south west of Beechworth, adjacent to the renowned Warner vineyard, at an altitude of around 460 metres. The soil is granitic, and the exposure is varied, from steep southerly slopes for the chardonnay, to a gentler north easterly aspect for the Roussanne/Marsanne.
