2023 Jauma Why Try So Hard
WINEMAKER: James Erskine
REGION: McLaren Vale, SA
VARIETY: Arneis, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache
VITICULTURE: Organic
This year’s blend comprises Arneis (58%), Sauvignon Blanc (27%) and Grenache (15%). Why Try So Hard was first made in 2013 as a gift to the Japanese market. Since then, it has become a mainstay of the Jauma range, usually made by combining a selection of batches from a few of James’s preferred vineyards in any given year. The Arneis is from a lofty site, home to 25-year-old vines rooted in soils of clay, quartz and ironstone. This fruit is treated carbonically and pressed to tank, whereas the Sauvignon Blanc from the same site is destemmed and spends three weeks on skins before being pressed to tank. The Grenache is treated carbonically. It’s aromatic, juicy and spicy with lip-smacking structure.
