2016 Ostal Levant Obras Completas

An exciting cellar release here! A blend of malbec and merlot from a number of parcels in Puy-l’Evêque (where Louis and Charlotte’s home and winery is) and Grézels, a commune just to the south. A portion of the fruit was fermented carbonically and, as always, the wine was run to barrel for a period of time before bottling.

2016 was a warm year in Cahors and indeed for Louis and Charlotte, resulting in slightly fruitier and fleshier wines which, while just as delicious to drink, provide an interesting contrast to some of the nervier and more austere recent vintages. Now approaching its 8th birthday, the fruit has started to take on some lovely tertiary character and the wine has entered a particularly good window for drinking – which is best done at a cool, but not cold, temperature.

Obras Completas translates to “complete works” in Occitan, which feels increasingly appropriate with each new wine we taste from this prolific couple.

Louis & Charlotte Perot farm two hectares of organic vines with a cool, dark cellar in a limestone cave just 30 minutes west of Cahors. They light the cave only with candlelight having decided that electricity would not be used. Sulphur is never added to the wines and they are not fined or filtered. The wines are dark but very fresh and with low alcohols.
