2022 Domaine de la Touraize La Cabane Ploussard
WINEMAKER: André-Jean Morin
REGION: Jura, FR
VARIETY: Poulsard
VITICULTURE: Organic
Ploussard from lieu-dits La Touraize and Curoulet. The vines are 30-50 years old and grow on grey marl. The grapes are de-stemmed carefully by hand, and then placed in a tank and filled with CO2. Macerated for 10 days, wetting the cap every 2-3 days, but without punching down. The grapes are pressed and the juice is blended with the free run wine. After malo in tank, the wine is transferred to old foudre, where it ages for 7 months. Not fined or filtered. Minimal SO2 added before bottling.
"Light red colour that is vibrant with a hint of brick. Raspberry, decayed roses, mace, red cherry, salt, aniseed and a little charcuterie. Good depth of aromas. Spice builds, with cinnamon, star anise and clove coming to the forefront. Youthful, with crunchy red fruits, a creamy texture and fine tannins. Little savoury twist at the end with some tea and pleasing bitterness. Very easy to drink. Chill a bit, but not too much." - Ryan Larkin, importer
Since 2010, A-J and Héléana have slowly converted all the vineyards to organic (completed in 2017, and they will obtain certification in 2019), and in Autumn of 2017, they also began experimenting with biodynamics, and are now currently in conversion as well. In the cellar A-J works with indigenous yeasts and without additives - with the exception of a small amount of sulfites. Élevage is either in stainless steel, old barriques of various sizes, or extremely old large Alsatian foudre (some over 100 years old). A-J is meticulously clean in the cellar, and this shows in the wines – they are of extremely high calibre, faultless, and can stay open for days without any issue. They are pure wines that truly express their terroir, and for me are some of the best wines coming out of the Jura.
