2023 Les Bertrand TripTyque

WINEMAKER: Yann Bertrand
REGION: Beaujolais, FR
VARIETY: Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah
VITICULTURE: Organic
If you’ve ever wondered what Yann can do with grapes other than Gamay, well here is the wine to show you! A one off cuvee for 2023 facilitated by Thibault Pfifferling. Following the July hail and another sudden loss of fruit for Yann, Thibault was on the phone immediately to offer support and source fruit for Yann. There was also a friendly challenge to make a “Tavel”. TripTyque is a blend of 60% Grenache (off limestone) 25% Cinsault (pebbles) and 15% Syrah (sandy soils) The Grenache and Cinsault underwent carbonic maceration for 22 days, the Syrah was directly pressed. Elevaged half in used barrels, half in concrete.
Strawberry and floral. Orange zest and grenadine. Lithe fruit tannins, a shimmy of spice. Lifted fruit with beautiful freshness. Digestible. Not a rose, not a red. Serve slightly chilled. An absolutely joyous drink.
Established in the 1950’s by Louis Bertrand, Les Bertrand is located in a special part of Beaujolais called ‘Grand-pré’. A section that straddles the crus of both Fleurie and Morgon, rich in sandy granitic soil. The estate wines from these appellations are uniquely different even though all the vines are in the same area. The complexity found in the vineyard is demonstrated through these different cuvees. Since 2016 Yann has been working with Pascal Guignet, a grower in Julienas for cuvee Julienas...100%, the only non estate wine in this release. The fruit is manually harvested and sorted. In the cellar vinification is cold carbonic and semi carbonic maceration at 10-12 degrees with natural yeasts in large concrete vats. Bottling is done in Spring according to the moon, all wines are un-fined and unfiltered.
