2023 Dirty Black Denim Corsican Lemonade
WINEMAKER: Lawrence Scanlon
REGION: King Valley, VIC
VARIETY: Sangiovese
VITICULTURE: Organic
The home of Niellicio and fruit forward, yet salty expressions of rosé that you just want to guzzle. Pink fruit like lillipilli and apple, dainty acid that feel like a kiss on the cheek from someone at a high school dance. It caters to those who prefer a "dry" rosé, but still offers plenty of complexity and charm to those who know that pink drink really is where the interest is when it comes to wine. A delicate little rose unfurling, scattered with sea salt and orange. Pass the salad and plonk yourself on a beach chair for this grown ups pink lemonade. 'Corsican Lemonade' 2023 Sangiovese Rosé plucked from the Corsini Vineyard, King Valley. Soil is volcanic red soil over grey clay loam. The Sangiovese was picked early, direct pressed at the vineyard straight away. Doesn't get fresher than that! Cold settled off lees. Fermented cold in tank and settled off ferment lees. 8 Months tank maturation, bottled with less than 25ppm SO2.
In an industry that often celebrates tradition rather than innovation, Lawrence Scanlon is breaking away from that stereotype. Originally a project started with his brother Tim, now Lawrence runs the show and the young, edgy, independent winemaker has built a brand from scratch specialising in Italian alternative varieties. The Dirty Black Denim describes him perfectly - cheeky, a little raw and fun. The wines celebrate community and hedonistic side of wine enjoyment - self describing the project as "smashable vino from Coburg”. Lawrence comes from Queensland, and has worked in viticulture and winemaking for a long time. As a young project, invested in sourcing and exploring fruit sources, Lawrence explores and makes wines with fruit from Heathcote, Sunbury and Merbein in northern Victoria. Recently he has just taken on the lease of an old vineyard in the southern part of the Heathcote region.
