2019 Tyrrell’s Mother's Shiraz

WINEMAKER: Chris Tyrrell
REGION: Hunter Valley, NSW
VARIETAL: Shiraz
VITICULTURE: Sustainable
Mother’s vineyard is situated adjacent to Chris and Tegan Tyrrell’s home and has always been known as Mother’s after Murray Tyrrell’s mother, who lived there for her entire married life. The block was planted in 2010 using cuttings from 4 Acres, Johnno’s and Old Patch, ensuring that our best Shiraz clones are preserved. The 2019 vintage in the Hunter Valley was another high quality year across all varieties and was a stellar follow up to 2018. Continued dry conditions meant cropping levels were slightly lower than normal however all of the fruit was in perfect condition with intense concentration. The last of the Shiraz to be harvested, on 16 February, the grapes were fermented in stainless-steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine was matured for 14 months in a single two-year-old 2700L French oak cask.
Mother’s shows the dark-fruited, savoury spice aroma that is typical of the vintage. A crunchy, medium-bodied palate with only a hint of oak that is already showing great drinkability despite its youth.
An iconic estate dating back to the mid-19th century, Tyrrell's is home to some of the oldest vines in the world. More traditional than most producers you'll find here, however truly dynamic and progressive with fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell at the helm.
