2020 Chapuis et Chapuis Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Rouge (1500ml)

VARIETAL: Pinot Noir
REGION: Burgundy, FR
VITICULTURE: Organic
WINEMAKER: Romain & Jean-Guillaume Chapuis
"Romain selected the barrel with the lightest expression of Pinot Noir for me. This is different to the 750ml, in that it is just Pinot Noir from their family vineyards in Savigny-Lès-Beaune. 10 days maceration, and then aged in old barrels for 6 months. Slightly lighter than the 750ml. No added sulfites.
Slightly darker profile than the 2019. Smells clean and really good. Red and black cherry flesh, with a little baking spice. Dark red apple, boysenberry, salt – it’s all young but very pleasant and enticing. To taste – young fruit – wild berries and cherries. A touch darker than 19, but still relatively light. Clean fruit, lots of drive, and perfect acidity that is balanced and verifies Romain's judgement in farming and when to harvest. Perky, perfectly ripe fruit. Fruit packed mid palate without being heavy. Good drive and hints of tension and fine tannin. It’s delicious now and will age well too. An absolute steal for a magnum of Burgundy at this price. Serve slightly chilled." - Ryan Larkin
Brothers Romain and Jean-Guillaume come from a wine making family in Aloxe-Corton. In 2009, they created their own domaine, Chapuis Frères. Based in Ladoix-Serrigny, they make classic style wines (still organic) from their family vineyards throughout Burgundy. Apart from Chapuis Frères, the brothers now also have a side project ‘Chapuis et Chapuis,’ in which they are making natural wines from Burgundy, from both their family vineyards. In the last couple of years, they have also (due to poor weather conditions) bought organic grapes from other regions as well.
Romain had spent a considerable amount of time learning to make wine overseas, in particular in Lebanon, New Zealand and Australia, before returning to Burgundy to spend three years working with Philippe Pacalet. And, it was after this that he decided to make his own wine.
The wines are vinified in their new winery in Ladoix-Serrigny. The grapes are fermented on their natural yeasts, without any additives, and are free from SO2. They all see relatively short ageing in old barrels (apart from the pét-nat), and are never fined or filtered.
