2020 Clos Bateau May Ga

WINEMAKER: Sylvie & Thierry Klok-de Visser
REGION: Beaujolais, FR
VARIETAL: Gamay
VITICULTURE: Organic/Biodynamic
100% Gamay. The vineyards are 330M above sea level, and the soils are made up of pink granite, clay and quartz. Semi carbonic maceration (12 days from one parcel and 20 days from another), then aged in old Burgundy barrels for 8 months. Not fined or filtered, and zero added sulphites.
Darker colour. Nose of dark wild berries and garrigue. Violets, sandalwood, exotic spice, tamarind and chocolate. Opens up after one hour and displays a dark, rocky minerality, flanked by wild herbs and flowers. Rhône-like almost, yet elegant and linear. To taste it is young, with boysenberry and blackberry fruit, wrapped up in that mineral core. The texture is fine, as are the tannins – barely noticeable, but enough to complete a fine structure in the wine. You may be pressed to guess Beaujolais – but after drinking, you will be completely wooed. More serious than Joujou, but its smoothness and many layers make it extremely captivating - and perfect for the colder months ahead.
Sylvie & Thierry Klok-de Visser started their adventure in 2019 when they moved to their domaine in Lantignié, Beaujolais. It’s a small 5.5ha, nature-friendly domaine where they work all year round with just the two of them. With almost all the vineyards and land (totalling 8ha) around their domaine, they are creating a thriving ecosystem. As soon as they arrived, they immediately planted over 100 fruit and nut trees in the vineyards to increase biodiversity. They want to work with nature in harmony, not against it.
