WINEMAKER: Vittorio Mattioli
REGION: Umbria, IT
VARIETAL: Malvasia
VITICULTURE: Organic/Biodynamic
"The Malvasia dello Scarparo is a complex white wine obtained from the homonymous grapes coming from an old vineyard owned some time ago by Scarparo di Terzo la Pieve. The vineyard is located at an altitude of about 500 meters on soils that are a mixture of clay rich in calcium and iron with tufa and travertine limestone outcrops. Natural fermentation takes place in open-air cement containers without temperature control and with a 3-day maceration on the skins. Aging for several months in cement tanks before bottling in sync with the waning lunar cycle. There is no sulfur added at any point in the winemaking process. Malvasia dello Scarparo is complex, fleshy, with good acidity and aromas that express white berry fruit, flowers and herbaceous notes."
Since the 1100s, the Mattioli family has lived in the tiny settlement the Romans deemed Collecapretta or “hill of the goats”. For generations, the Mattiolis have cultivated the rugged hillsides of this Umbrian village located just outside of Spoleto. Today, the farm is barely 8 hectares in total but boasts a dynamic mix of local olives trees, farro and other ancient grain plantings and about four hectare of indigenous old vines. The total production of Collecapretta is only about 8000 bottles during a good year, yet the family vinifies many different cuvées to show the various expressions their land is capable of.
