2021 Scintilla Augies Afterglow Joven Jugosa Roja

WINEMAKER: James Madden
VARIETAL: Tempranillo, Shiraz
REGION: Adelaide Hills, SA
VITICULTURE: Organic/Biodynamic
"45% of the blend is whole bunch pressed Tempranillo, barrel fermented in a 10 year old demi-muid. 45% 1287 clone Shiraz was open topped fermented with a 75/25 combination of de-stemmed and whole-bunches. A barrel of 100% carbonic macerated Tempranillo offered some juiciness and texture to elevate the blend. All wines were aged in old french barrels on fine lees.
Sounds of mirth fill the air as the heat of the summers day start to dissipate along with the light to reveal a perfect still balmy night. Augie is nestled in my arms, silent, content and perfect with her head tucked in tight close to my body. I glance around and look at my friends, my community, the flames from the bonfire flirting playfully across their faces. My belly is full from the evenings feast I shift and sink into my chair, close my eyes and sigh a big sigh of contentment. I feel a hand squeeze shoulder and my tired eyes creak open to see a bottle raised to suggest a top up. I nod gratefully to Andy and raise my glass and watch the bright red juice tumble into my cup. This is an Afterglow time!" - James Madden
Sommelier-turned-winemaker James Madden has worked with the likes of James Erskine (Jauma) and Tom Shobbrook. He now shares a shed in the Basket Range with Alex Schulkin (The Other Right) to produce his own minimal intervention wines. All grapes are organic and/or biodynamic, handpicked and processed by shovel & fork. Wines are transferred by siphon using gravity, unfined, unfiltered and always zero adds.
