2022 Giorgio Nicolini Piccola Nera

WINEMAKER: Giorgio Nicolini
REGION: Friuli-Venezia Giulia, IT
VARIETY: Piccola Nera
VITICULTURE: Organic
Piccola Nera or Nera Tenera is a native Istrian variety, originally in the area of Porec in Croatia. Delicious to eat as table grapes, in the past it was used in blends with Refosco. Nicolini makes the wine in purity, obtaining a pale red, sweet and fruity ‘vin de soif’. The wine is hand harvested in small baskets, de-stemmed and macerated on the skins for 48 hours in open vats, aged 6 months in stainless steel containers.
Giorgio Nicolini is a small family-run farm, based on old traditions inherited from grandparents. Their effort is devoted to regenerating and replanting the old types of native vines, now almost completely lost, using the original centenary clones from their own vineyard. The two hectares of vines are situated on the hills above the town of Muggia, old venetian colony, in the outskirts of Trieste. In front, the sea of the Gulf of Trieste, on the other side, Slovenia and Croatia borders are steps away. The vines are 20/30 years old and they grow manly in clay with marine sediments.
