2022 La Comarcal Del Moro Merseguera Blanco
WINEMAKER: Javi Revert & Victor Marques
REGION: Valencia, SP
VARIETY: Merseguera
VITICULTURE: Organic/Biodynamic
From Merseguera vines between 15-50 years old in Venta del Moro, planted on calcareous clay soil at around 600m. Very fresh and only 11% abv. A touch of fruit weight before a zing of herbal bitterness.
La Comarcal (The Local) is based in the mountainous village of Venta del Moro, part of the Valencia D.O. It’s the project of close friends, Javi Revert and Victor Marques, who met as young makers at Celler del Roure where they worked together for over a decade.
La Comarcal attempts to reconcile the intensity with which both Victor and Javi work, focusing on regenerative farming practice, keeping to the heritage varietals of Valencia, old vines and terroir expressiveness with what they see as their personal characters; an unflustered calmess considered typical of the people of the Mediterranean coast. The result is La Comarcal, fresh, vibrant, sluggable wine produced with all of the care and attention to detail in farming and wine making that Javi uses in his own personal project or Victor maintains at Celler del Roure but with a laidback price tag and vinous style.
All this is made possible because of the landscape and culture of Venta del Moro. Its combination of altitude, traditional varietals and Mediterranean climate mean it’s possible to farm organically and biodynamically without huge amounts of extra vineyard labour. It’s also a part of Valencia where indigenous varietals have slipped behind the foreigners in terms of grape and vineyard prices, which means old vines like those used for La Comarcal come at a discount.
