2022 Margan Breaking Ground Albariño

WINEMAKER: Ollie Margan
REGION: Hunter Valley, NSW
VARIETAL: Albariño
VITICULTURE: Organic/Sustainable
Two picks; early pick direct pressed to a combination of concrete and old French oak 500L puncheons on solids. Late pick fermented on skins to dryness (7 days), both fermented via ambient yeast. Components blended and rested on lees for 4 months. Racked once, sulphured. Bottled without fining, filtration or pH adjustment.
Bright, fresh stone fruit on the nose, with a grapefruit oil twang. Textural with salted peach pith and apricot kernel bitterness. Chewy and salty with bright acidity. Good now, will age well.
The Margan family have been growing grapes and making wine on the volcanic soils of Broke Fordwich, Wonnarua country for more than 25 years. This unique sub-region of the Hunter Valley is defined by its inonic concentration, which allows for flavour ripeness with the sacrifice of acidity.
The property now has over 100 plus hectares under vine and is farmed organically - have obtained sustainable certification. The Margan Breaking Ground range is made by Ollie Margan, who has recently returned to the property after completing his studies at The Univeristy of Adelaide. All wines are made with no additions except for SO2 at bottling.
