2022 Matthias Warnung 'Feldstuck' Chardonnay
WINEMAKER: Matthias Warnung
REGION: Kamptal, AU
VARIETY: Chardonnay
VITICULTURE: Organic
VINEYARDS: Old-vine Chardonnay, 40+ years old, planted on limestone and loess soils. Certified organic and full of character.
VINTAGE: “The 2022 growing season in Kamptal was marked by a series of climatic challenges that tested the resilience and adaptability of local winemakers. A mild winter with minimal precipitation delayed budbreak until late April, reducing the risk of frost damage. However, the flowering period was affected by rain, leading to issues like coulure and downy mildew. The summer months were characterized by extreme heat and dryness, which accelerated vine growth and ripening. Fortunately, timely rainfall in late August and early September helped to balance the ripening process, resulting in a harvest that was slightly above the long-term average.” - Wine Austria
TECH NOTES: After a 24-hour cold soak, the grapes were pressed to old puncheons and aged for 2 years on full lees. The wine is topped only a few times thanks to the Warnung family’s naturally humid cellar, which slows evaporation and oxidation, allowing gentle, slow development and preserving delicate flavors. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulphites.
TASTING NOTES: “Ripe, savoury, and aromatic with notes of florals, grapefruit, ripe pithy fruit, and a touch of mustardy spice. The mouthful is lean and mineral yet nicely grippy thanks to the skin contact. Good acidity leads to a saline and slightly smoky finish” - Forest Wines
