2023 Matthias Warnung 'Potatoland' Gruner
WINEMAKER: Matthias Warnung
REGION: Kamptal, AU
VARIETY: Gruner
VITICULTURE: Organic
10–15-year-old Grüner Veltliner vines from the Warnung family estate in Etsdorf, Kamptal Valley. Planted on a mix of brown earth and loess soils, farmed organically under Lenz Moser’s Hochkultur vertical training system. The site benefits from the warm Pannonian climate, tempered by cool winds from the northwestern Waldviertel. VINTAGE: “The 2023 vintage in Kamptal, Austria, was marked by challenging weather conditions, including dry spells, damp periods, and severe storms. Despite these obstacles, the hard work of winemakers was rewarded with a glorious autumn, leading to expressive, dense, and well-balanced white wines.” – Wine Austria
TECH NOTES: Hand-harvested Grüner Veltliner grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel. Fermentation occurs at ambient temperatures, followed by 11 months of maturation on fine lees in steel. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, is lightly filtered, unfined, and finished with a small addition of sulfur after malo.
TASTING NOTES: Crisp, bright, and incredibly expressive, this Grüner Veltliner bursts with juicy pear and plum notes and a zesty freshness that makes it impossible not to keep sipping. Light, playful, and wonderfully thirst-quenching.
