2025 Wilfred Monte
WINEMAKER: James & Kimberly Cooter
REGION: McLaren Vale,SA
VARIETY: Montepulciano
VITICULTURE: Organic/Biodynamic
The fruit sourced from a single site on the outskirts of the McLaren Vale township on Tatachilla Limestone where the soil is dark and rich, with deep underground limestone, providing density and structure. VINTAGE The lead up to the 2024 vintage progressed with distinct weather challenges. Spring brought strong winds, impacting crop levels, while vintage was notably dry after rain in December & January. The lighter crop ultimately allowed us to carefully manage fruit intake, proving to be a blessing in disguise. WINEMAKING The fruit was destemmed and gently crushed before undergoing a wild fermentation with indigenous yeasts in open fermenters. Once primary fermentation was complete, the wine was pressed off skins and allowed to undergo natural malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. It was then matured for 12 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads, adding subtle texture and integration. TASTING Colour Deep purple with bright magenta hues Bouquet Layers of ripe black cherry, mulberry, and plum, intertwined with lifted notes of wild herbs, black pepper, and a subtle earthy undertone and a whisper of cocoa and spice. Palate Medium-bodied with a supple texture and vibrant acidity that drives freshness throughout. Juicy red & dark fruits sit at the core, framed by fine, chalky tannins & a savoury thread that lends complexity. The finish is long, leaving traces of dark berries and spice.
