2018 Verget Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Sous le Puits
WINEMAKER: Jean-Marie Guffens
REGION: Burgundy, FR
VARIETAL: Chardonnay
VITICULTURE: Sustainable
"Notes of sulfur, white flower and citrus rind introduce moderately dense middle weight flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel before concluding in an intense, stony and sneaky long finish. I like the balance and while this will need time to develop better depth, the underlying material appears to be present.” - Allen Meadows, Burghound
This Premier Cru vineyard is situated near the village of Blagny and is the highest Premier Cru within the Puligny appellation. Indeed, at 360-380 metres it could make the claim as the highest Premiere Cru vineyard in the Côte de Beaune (although a few sites in Saint-Aubin may mount a challenge here). Some years ago, this site would have been considered one of the coolest on the Côte d’Or. Today the wines are fleshier and more intense, yet always showcase this producer’s love of purity and refreshing structure. The winemaking is classic Guffens, utilising only the first press juices fermented in barrels with between 20 and 30% new oak (depending on the vintage).
