2020 Jean-François Debourg Les Prenelles
Description
WINEMAKER: Jean-François Debourg
REGION: Beaujolais, FR
VARIETAL: Gamay
VITICULTURE: Certified Organic/Biodynamic
Beaujolais but a bit (lot) more serious than most 'entry level' wines of the region. No carbonic to be seen here, more expressive of terroir, mineral, savoury and earthy. Good stuff.
Jean Francois has been a farmer for over 20 years, working his 40 hectares of vineyards organically, certified since 2020. A chance encounter with Francois Ecot in 2015 changed his course, from winegrower to winemaker. Francois became his mentor and showed him the way of natural wine. Located in the Pierres Dorées region, the southern part of Beaujolais, he has a myriad of soil types including clay-limestone, limoneux, granite, alluvial and pink sand. Under vine is Gamay, Viognier and Chardonnay. Presently, only a portion of the grapes are kept for the estate, the remainder sold to other winemakers, including Viognier to Alice Bouvot of I’Octavin and Julien Altaber, as well as the local cooperative.

Come curious. Leave with a new favourite.
We don’t tell you what to drink. You don’t need to know your varietals, regions or vintages, and you certainly don’t need to pretend you do. Tell us what you like, hate, what you’ve tried or curious about — we’ll take it from there. Sometimes the best bottle is the one you didn’t know you wanted.
