Jamie Kutch left a career in New York in 2005 to move to California and pursue his dream of making Pinot Noir. As the story always goes, people thought he was crazy… until they began hearing about his wines. Jamie cut his teeth among some of the best producers in the Pinot Noir world, becoming involved in the early stages of the IPOB movement, and receiving sage advice during time spent with none other than Aubert de Villaine. Jamie has taken everything he has learned to produce some of the most compelling and terroir driven wines in California. In just over a decade, he has firmly established Kutch Wines as one of the state’s top makers of Pinot Noir, if only measured by the scores doled out by notoriously tough critic Alan Meadows of Burghound.
Kutch wines are made as naturally as possible. After the grapes are harvested by hand, they are sorted meticulously and moved only by gravity, before being fermented in small open-top containers with hand and foot punch downs using indigenous yeasts. When fermented, the wine is gravity fed into neutral oak barrels, where they age sur lie.
