2022 La Grange aux Belles Le vin de Jardin
Description
WINEMAKER: Marc Houtin & Gérald Peau (Jesse)
REGION: Loire Valley, FR
VARIETY: Grolleau
VITICULTURE: Organic
100% Grolleau grown on black schist. Carbonic maceration for 6 days, and then aged in tank for 6 months. 20ppm SO2 before bottling. Not fined or filtered. "A light-medium red that is way too easy to drink. Super clean expression of Grolleau, bursting with berry fruit and savoury notes. Pure glou glou, but with depth. Boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry flavours with a savoury, foresty edge. Detailed with delicate spice, bright fruit and fine tannins. So juicy and crunchy, before finishing with nice tension and a mineral kick. Crazy price for this sort of deliciousness, Grolleau never tasted so good! Serve chilled." - Ryan Larkin, importer
In 2007, Marc was joined by Julien Bresteau. It was then that the pair began to convert the vineyards to organic. They worked tirelessly over the years to improve soil health, and also replanted many vines within the vineyards. They slowly purchased more plots, in and around Anjou. A few years ago, Gérald Peau (Jesse) joined them. And in 2022, Julien moved on to another project.
Marc, Gérald and their team farm many varieties. The subsoils are mainly made of schist, with some silt and clay on top. Water stress is essential, and there is little rain here, the vines work hard! They use herbal infusions such as nettles, horsetail and buckthorn and put low doses of compost on the soil at the end of winter to relaunch the microbial activity. The grapes are vinified with their natural yeasts and no additives are used, except for a small amount of SO2 before bottling, sometimes none at all.
