Whilst the remaining fruit was destemmed, wild fermented for 5 days & pressed off into old puncheons. Hawkes Bay Merlot (42%) was partially wholebunch pressed & aged in an old puncheon & an old hogshead. Whilst the remainder was carbonic macerated for 5 days. Pressed off & settled in tank for a week before being racked to old puncheons. Nelson Gewürztraminer (16%) was destemmed, skin fermented for 7 days & matured in old puncheons. The resulting wines were blended & settled in Spring prior to bottling. Unfined & unfiltered.
"Confectionary fruits open up to a juicy, bright, light red. Rhubarb, rose water and melon. A true fruit salad and one of our favourites that tastes like a mouthful of Skittles." - Rob
Rob Burley found his place in the wine world after working for a number of great like-minded producers abroad but it wasn’t until he moved to Australia and started to work for Bill Downie and Patrick Sullivan that the concept for Unkel Wines was born. He and his wife Kate recently returned to New Zealand in 2019 where their inspiration & devotion towards organic viticulture & heartfelt wines continues to unfurl.
