2023 Bink Little Red
WINEMAKER: Koen Janssens
REGION: Barossa/Langhorne/McLaren, SA
VARIETY: Semillon, Red Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier, Ruby Cabernet
VITICULTURE: Organic
This year’s Little Red is a blend of Semillon (40%), Red Muscat (20%), Pinot Blanc (15%), Meunier (15%) and Ruby Cabernet (10%). The Semillon, Pinot Blanc and Meunier are sourced from 40-year-old vines on sandy soils in the Barossa Valley; the Ruby Cabernet comes from one of Koen's most recently acquired sources in Langhorne Creek—a 30-year-old block on sand over clay and limestone; and the Red Muscat hails from a 60-year-old sandy block in McLaren Vale.
The Muscat spent three days on skins and was then transferred to stainless steel with 50% whole bunches. The Pinot Blanc and Meunier were destemmed and pressed to stainless steel. The Semillon spent a day on skins before being pressed to stainless steel. After fermentation and malolactic conversion, the wines were blended and bottled.
Koen Janssens started his wine life working as a Sommelier in Belgium and around Europe. He landed in Sydney in 2012 but it wasn't long before he was called to life in the vineyard in South Australia. Koen worked with legends we all know and love such as Anton from Lucy M, James from Jauma. He started Yetti and the Kokonut with Dave Geyer, but it was old mate Pete Schell from Spinifex who suggested Koen get out on his own, and Bink was born in 2017.
