In a previous life, this wine was known as Fujisan. James renamed the wine in honour of his long-term friend and eternal provider of “a couch to sleep on” in Melbourne. Fruit for this sparkling is sourced from Lulu Lutz’s 16-year-old vines in her Blewitt Springs vineyard. It’s a deep and sandy site overlying schist and clay and facing east. The fruit was directly pressed to tank, bottled with 10g/L residual sugar and disgorged a few months later.
James Erskine is an honours graduate in soil chemistry and celebrated sommelier. A leading light in organic farming and zero-adds wine. He also owns a certified organic cherry farm. How good.
