"This is a new, and very exciting cuvée under the Nikau banner. In 2024 we were lucky enough to get access to some exceptional Chardonnay fruit from the legendary Nicholson River vineyard... The soils as you would expect are alluvial gravels and clays. It is cropped extremely low at approximately 0.8t to the acre and is entirely comprised of the p58 clone. This clone was one of the first Chardonnay clones brought into Australia, in 1958 in fact (from France). - Dane Johns, Momento Mori & Nikau Farm The 2024 Nikau ‘Gippsland’ Chardonnay, a new and deeply satisfying cuvée made from 47-year-old organically farmed vines at the legendary Nicholson River Vineyard — a site that helped define Gippsland Chardonnay in the 1980s and ’90s. The dry-grown vines, planted on alluvial gravels and clays by the riverbank, yield fruit of piercing clarity. Wild fermented and raised in a single 650L ceramic egg, the wine is pure and crystalline, evoking white florals, lemon and lime, saline minerality, and remarkable poise.
