Pinot blanc is one of four ancestral white grape varieties, with most of its cultivation occurring in the river valley village of Celles-sur-Ource—the headquarters of Champagne Pierre Gerbais. Being resistant to humidity and spring frosts, Pinot blanc crops favourably in Celles-sur-Ource, and it is the precise and masterful expression of this heirloom variety that places Champagne Pierre Gerbais at the forefront of this exciting region. Here, the family owns the greatest share of Pinot blanc, with over 4ha of vines, as well as the oldest Pinot blanc vines, at over a century old.
8th generation grower, 4th generation winemaker Aurélien looks after the Gerbais domaine today. The family converted to organics in the nineties after seeing the effects chemicals had on their grandmother. They also hold the oldest pinot blanc vines in the region, one of the rarer grapes allowed in the Champagne AOC.
